home > At Easter, the people of Balmaseda become actors to bring to life an age-old tradition, the dramatic representation of the Passion of Christ. The town welcomes thousands of visitors from very different walks of life to celebrate this event.
From Balmaseda northwards, towards SOPUERTA, along the BI-630 and the BI-2701 the route takes you in search of the Casa de Juntas in Avellaneda, which is currently home to Las Encartaciones Museum.
After the visit to the Museum, the route takes you to SOPUERTA, which is famous for its two Mineral Calcining Kilns, which have now been declared an Artistic Monument.
You will now approach the KARRANTZA valley, where there are two visits worth mentioning.
KARPIN ABENTURA, a walk through the living history of our fauna and the real life of our planet. Bears, wolves, deer and many other animals live in this recovery centre.
It is definitely worth a visit, and you will be pleasantly surprised.
The other is Pozalagua Cave, near the Ranero neighbourhood and under the rock of the same name you will find this treasure hidden in the depths of the earth.
A small access door to an amazing cave that is 225 metres long. Inside the cave you can admire the amazing spectacle formed by the thousands of stalactites and stalagmites.
In the main gallery, called the “Sala de Versalles” (Versailles Room), you can contemplate the largest number of eccentric stalactites in the world (instead of hanging perpendicularly they open out like the branches of a tree).
On the way back, if you still fancy a bit more movement, you can make a detour to the north, along the BI-2701 in Sopuerta to MUSKIZ until you reach the coast at La Arena Beach and Zierbena Port.
Before returning to the capital of Bizkaia, you can visit Santurce with its fishing port and Portugalete with its famous Suspension Bridge.
