Motorbike routes

BILBAO - SAN JUAN DE GAZTELUGATXE - BERMEO - MUNDAKA - GERNIKA

Leave BILBAO along the N-637 road and take the exit to the BI-631 at DERIO.

San Juan de GaztelugatxePass through the town of MUNGIA, via the BI-3101 to reach the coast of BAKIO.

Along the coast in the direction of BERMEO, you can make a detour to visit one of the most spectacular landscapes in Bizkaia, SAN JUAN DE GAZTELUGATXE.

Built on a rock in the Cantabrian Sea, it is accessed by 237 steps. As tradition would have it, once you reach the chapel you should ring the bell three times and make a wish. The effort required to climb the steps is well worth it when you see the spectacular views.

San Juan de GaztelugatxeOnce the visit to this magical place has ended, continue towards Bermeo, which is a typical fishing town where steep streets rise up from the port which is the heart of the town.

Along the BI-635 you can make a stop in MUNDAKA, which is a popular surfing town.

From its viewpoints you will get a good view over Gernika Estuary, the Cantabrian Sea and the nearby Island of Izaro.

Crossing the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, you will reach the town of GERNIKA-LUMO, which has symbolised Basque liberty and peace since the bombing of the town in 1937.

Oma ForestAlong the BI-638 northwards, you will reach KORTEZUBI, and in the surrounding area you will find two of Bizkaia’s great attractions; Santimamiñe Caves and Oma Forest, also known as the Enchanted Forest.

This is the end of the day trip and you can now return to Bilbao. From Gernika take the BI-635 to Amorebieta and finally the A-8 to the capital of Bizkaia.
