home > Riding a bike or cycling is a very popular sport, as well as a healthy and enjoyable means of transport, which you can use on a daily basis around the city.
It has been clinically proven to be one of the most all-round activities to prevent back ache, protect the joints, strength the muscles and improve the circulation and the immune system.
Cycling is environmentally friendly, which is an essential factor for all citizens.
Why don’t you use a bike to get around the city?

Bicycles have their own cycle lanes which are separate from motorbiker traffic (known as bide gorris), as well as other recommendable routes along quieter streets, meaning we can follow longer routes in relative safety.
Likewise, you can use pedestrianised areas or areas with restricted traffic to complete your route. Always cycle at moderate speed and remember that pedestrians always have the right of way in these areas.
For your safety always use the bike lane wherever possible.

Although helmets are not obligatory in the city, they can be very effective against knocks at slow speeds. Their use is always recommended especially for children under 13.
Be visible. Dress appropriately, try and wear light or bright colours. At night use the lights on your bicycle and it is recommended to put reflective materials on your bike and your clothing.

To prevent theft. It is a good idea to chain up the wheels and the seat, through the frame. Uses the bike racks provided by the City Council.

You can take your bike on all the train operators for free (MetroBilbao, Feve, Euskotren and Renfe).
Avoid rush hours and use the carriages specifically prepared for this purpose, usually the first or the last.
You can also use the funicular railway and lifts where it is allowed in the regulations.
